Biography
CV

Sander Coers (b. 1997) is an artist working with photography based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, whose work balances the borders of documentary and fiction. With a tender gaze, he seeks to establish new perspectives on masculinity by visualizing, recontextualizing, and (de)constructing memories. The coming-of-age theme is recurring throughout his work, as he reflects on stories of love, friendship, and self-discovery drawn from his family, friends, and peers.

Fascinated by the the ability of vacation photos to transmit stories throughout generations, Sander explores the romanticized notions of the past encapsulated in these images. His visual style emulates these photos through deeply saturated colors and nostalgic scenes, infusing his portraits, stills, and landscapes with profound emotions. He delves into how these photos, typically portraying only happy moments, contribute to shaping familial narratives and perceptions of history.

Sander graduated with Honors in Fine Art from the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam in 2021. He self-published his graduation project Come Home, which was selected for multiple prizes. Since then, he has published two more books: This Naked Incident and Blue Mood (Al Mar). His work has been exhibited in various galleries and museums in The Netherlands and abroad. His publications include features in Foam, Vogue, Die Zeit, i-D, and Monopol. Sander was recognized as a Rising Star of 2022 by the Dutch newspaper NRC and is currently participating in the Foam Talent program for 2024-2025. His work has been acquired by the Preus Museum, Rabobank, and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
